Ethical Investment Week 2022: Wrap-up and Highlights

10 Oct 2022

October 3 to 9 saw the celebration of Ethical Investment Week (EIW). The annual event is co-ordinated by the Ethical Adviser’s Co-op. A group of leading expert ethical advisers, the Co-op is comprised of 31 advisers who collectively advise on over $2.7 billion on behalf of over 3,600 Australians and New Zealanders. Money Matters was the first (and is currently the only) New Zealand Member of the Co-op.

For its ninth year, Ethical Investment Week’s theme is ‘You & Your Ethical Adviser’. This theme focused on how investors can work with an ethical investment adviser to genuinely do well and do good. EIW 2022 featured a range of events and content, including several involving Money Matters and our clients. Here are a few highlights from the week that we hope you’ll revisit and enjoy.

2022’s Ethical Investment Guide

2022’s Ethical Investment Guide is the ideal place to start your EIW journey. The guide offers a summary of this year’s theme and explains that as demand for ethical investment options has increased, so too have instances of ‘greenwashing’ within the industry. For discerning investors, this means finding authentic ethical investments is challenging.

As the guide says, Ethical Investment Week shows how, by working with a specialist adviser, you can genuinely do well and do good. It positioned the week’s events as an opportunity to learn more about how Co-op members operate – including the Green Leaf Ratings system.

Rodger launched the ‘Your Money Matters’ podcast

On October 4th, Rodger launched his new podcast series; ‘YOUR MONEY MATTERS – Ethical Investing with Dr Rodger Spiller’. The first episode’s release coincides with EIW, and features an interview with a Money Matters client, Mark. Together, Rodger and Mark explore the why, what and how of the ethical investment journey. From Mark’s motivations, through to his ethical investment plan and portfolio provided by Money Matters.

The podcast is available on the Money Matters podcast page, iHeartRadio, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Money Matters clients feature in a short film from the Co-op

As part of EIW 2022, the Ethical Advisers’ Co-op produced a three-minute video featuring several clients’ perspectives on the benefits of specialist ethical investment advice. The video explores the clients’ passion for ethical investment, and the key attributes they sought when selecting an adviser to partner with. The film features three Money Matters clients – Mark, Jon and Yoshimi – and is now available to watch on the Co-op’s website or via the Money Matters ‘resources’ page.

Listen to Rodger’s interview with the NZ Herald…

During EIW 2022, Rodger was interviewed by the NZ Herald for an article and their podcast, ‘Continuous Disclosure: How to see through the greenwash of ethical investing’. The article summarises the podcast episode that covers many of the big questions surrounding ethical investment today – including, what is ethical investment? How can investors steer clear of greenwashing? And how has ethical investing evolved in recent years?
